Recently we came across an interesting article about the science of happiness. It explains that wearing sunglasses can make you happier.
Really! And it’s not just because you look cooler. Here’s how it works.
It’s a busy, busy world we’ve all made for ourselves. Much of the time, our brains are over stimulated. With so much information pouring in all the time, the brain often doesn’t know how to react to all that stimulation. So . . .
The brain looks for ‘biofeedback’.
As a shortcut, your brain takes clues from your body. Example? Let’s say the muscles on your face are lifting the lips. Your brain registers that physical movement and thinks, we must be happy! Then it releases dopamine, a feel-good chemical that makes you feel happier. (According to Harvard happiness scientist Shawn Anchor, it also turns on the learning centres of the brain, making you more productive in whatever you’re doing.)
Many of us think that happiness means you smile more. That’s true — but it’s a two-way road. Smiling also means you’re happier! So if you don’t feel like smiling? Go ahead and ‘fake it till you make it’. Forcing a smile onto your face automatically begins the process of change.
What’s this got to do with sunglasses? When it comes to biofeedback, not frowning is just as important as smiling.
Biofeedback includes how we react to light.
Remember, your brain is looking for clues for whether you should feel happy. Exceptionally bright light — like the bright light of a winter’s day — causes us to squint. Squinting looks a lot like sadness, anger and other negative emotions. So your brain tells you to feel sad.
But sunglasses stop you from squinting. So your brain stops thinking it needs to be sad or angry. (If you’re getting glare from reading this, consider move the screen or adjusting the lighting. We’ve talked about here before.)
Creditview Optical has a range of fashionable sunglasses brands that are bound to put a smile on your face; and they are currently 25% off…that’s bound to put a smile on your face!
